Time is of the essence at this year’s Melbourne Fringe, with shows ranging from one minute to 50 years, and many in between.
Five years ago, Sammy J set in motion one of the more ambitious experiments in comedy history - The 50 Year Show - the duration of which will take in half of the century. It’s not just a gimmick, either. While the project’s first instalment was an evening packed with spill-your-drink laughs, it also created a kind of time machine, the effects of which were felt by everyone in attendance.
"What struck me on the night was that there was genuine emotion in the room," he says. "It seemed to dawn on people that this was something that was going to continue, and that there will be people in the room there who might die before the final one. There was this energy at the end, when everyone got up on stage and we all finished with a big singalong, and that just blew me away."
Five years doesn’t sound like much, but consider that The 50 Year Show’s inaugural outing came at a time when George W. Bush was president of the US; the freshly elected Kevin Rudd was still riding a wave of popular support; and Michael Jackson jokes had some currency. “You say that out loud and it feels like it’s already historical,” Sammy says.
