History in the joking

John Bailey | Brisbane Times | 8 September 2013

Time is of the essence at this year’s Melbourne Fringe, with shows ranging from one minute to 50 years, and many in between.

Five years ago, Sammy J set in motion one of the more ambitious experiments in comedy history - The 50 Year Show - the duration of which will take in half of the century. It’s not just a gimmick, either. While the project’s first instalment was an evening packed with spill-your-drink laughs, it also created a kind of time machine, the effects of which were felt by everyone in attendance.

"What struck me on the night was that there was genuine emotion in the room," he says. "It seemed to dawn on people that this was something that was going to continue, and that there will be people in the room there who might die before the final one. There was this energy at the end, when everyone got up on stage and we all finished with a big singalong, and that just blew me away."

Five years doesn’t sound like much, but consider that The 50 Year Show’s inaugural outing came at a time when George W. Bush was president of the US; the freshly elected Kevin Rudd was still riding a wave of popular support; and Michael Jackson jokes had some currency. “You say that out loud and it feels like it’s already historical,” Sammy says.

Premiering Wednesday 3 July, ABC1 9:30PM.

Tapings are on Tuesdays, 6-9:30PM at the ABC Studios Sydney and you can book your spot for the entire 7-week run here

The pilot was so much fun! Sammy J is excellent as host, the cast are amazing and Dave Eastgate is absolutely hilarious the entire time! If you can get down to the tapings and are a fan of political and popular culture satire sketch comedy, I highly recommend heading along.

Sammy J’s Live Chat on Herald Sun’s website, 27 March 2013, answering questions about the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, miscellaneous questions, impersonating the Festival Director and some pretty tense moments with Rupert Murdoch.

Heart-wrenching moment of all:

Madeline: Do you ever miss your Forest of Dreams cast?

Sammy J: Every minute of every day.
